There was once a certain god who lived on Mount Olympus. Homer (850 BC) told of the exploits of Ulysses in The Iliad and The Odyssey. Ulysses was the King of Ithaca. He conquered Troy and slayed the Cyclops.
Zeus, god of the heavens and earth, dominated the court of the gods on Mount Olympus. He had the power of lightning and ruled over all the other gods.
Hera, his wife, was the goddess of marriage.
Athena was the goddess of wisdom.
Aphrodite was the goddess of beauty and love.
Poseidon was the god of the sea.
Ares was the god of war.
Artemis was the goddess of hunting.
Apollon her brother, was the god of beauty and the arts.
Iris was the goddess of the rainbow and the messenger of Zeus.
Demeter was the goddess of agriculture.
Dionysus was the god of wine and the theatre.
Hades was the god of the underworld.
Hestia was the goddess of hearth and home.
Hephaestus was the god of fire and forging and was the blacksmith of the gods.
Hermes was the god of travel, tradesmen and thieves.

Along with the gods lived the centaurs (beings with the body of a horse and the head of a man), the fairies of the forests, the dryads, the water nymphs, the naiads and the satyrs (demigods with horned heads, long ears and goats’ legs).
