The Greeks eat a large selection of hors d’oeuvres known as mezes (mezeves). During the hard times when the country was occupied by the colonels, the Greeks had only their black bread to eat. So now they make the best of the abundance of fresh produce available. Don’t be surprised then to see as many as ten dishes appear on the table at the same time, each person helping themselves as often as they want.

Tomatoes, peppers, olives, feta cheese, olive oil, grilled meat, stuffed vine leaves – Greek cuisine is very varied. Saganaki, tsatsiki, choriatik? Let the waiter choose for you, he’ll recommend the best dishes to try. And don’t worry about the price – you can eat for around 10 € per head, wine included. Talking of wine, taste the Retsina, of course, but make the most of the wonderful white wines served in carafes, which are equally incomparable and delicious from tavern to tavern.

Remember to leave your psila (small change) as a tip.
